Slip Covered Ottoman

Lately my dad has been "threatening" to bring a recliner to the cabin. I decided to appease him by bringing an ottoman to the river. A few years ago I bought one for a dollar at a local garage sale. The fabric was stained and dated but the piece was structurally sound. I removed all of the icky fabric, Lysol'd the heck out of it, and covered the base with fresh material.

Then I added casters to the bottom of the ottoman.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to use casters
on all of my ottomans, coffee tables, and side tables.

I sewed a white canvas slip cover for it
and used the piece in our basement for several years.

Our furniture at the cabin is red.
I decided to update the ottoman with a denim slip cover.
I had plenty scrap material left over from previous sewing projects
so I didn't have to buy anything.
Sweet!

Now I'm not a seamstress mind you.
I couldn't read a pattern to save my life but I can sew a straight stitch.
I'm sure there is a better way to do this, but here's how "I" put my slip cover together.

***turn the fabric inside out***

***sew the base and finish the edges***

***sew cording around the base leaving a room to attach the skirt***

***create a ruffled skirt by zig-zagging over a piece of string***

***pull the string/cinch up the fabric***

***attach the skirt to the base***

Here's the final product:

What'cha think?

I love it...

especially the patterned top.
It just adds a little more texture to the room.

Grandpa Shorty will be happy to have a place to put his feet up
and I won't have to deal with a mauve recliner.
It's a win-win for everyone!

As always thanks for reading 13CCF. I hope you've found some inspiration!

Slate Grey Bedroom Set

A couple of weeks ago I had an opportunity to update a three piece bedroom set for a local family. I'm kicking myself for not taking any 'before' pictures. Guess you'll just have to use your imagination this time. Sorry! The furniture was in good shape for its years. Jenny just wanted to give it a new finish for their new home.

Here's the final product:

What'cha think?

I love the slate grey color!

It was a custom mix using ASCP Graphite and Pure White.

The color is actually darker than the pictures suggest.

I admit one of the things I enjoy most about blogging is the staging aspect.

I usually don't get the opportunity to "follow" these pieces home,
so I like to give viewers an idea of how I might integrate them in my home.

This particular bedroom set is going to be used in a boy's bedroom.

I threw together a few fabrics...

colors....

and

accessories I thought would work well with the slate grey color of the furniture.

I love tinkering with the different combinations.

This Nebraska map was a gift from my sister.
If memory serves me correct, her mother-n-law found it at
The Bargain Box on Hilton Head Island, SC.
The map is actually quite old. The community of Wynot isn't even listed on it.
I love it.
Thanks, Sally!

Once again, thanks for reading 13CCF. I hope your summer is off to a great start. Let me know if I can help you update any of your furnishings!

Hello, Florence!

Annie Sloan has a rock'n chalk paint called Florence. I love her. Florence has a gorgeous greenish-blue hue that reminds me of a piece of turquoise jewelery.

My latest client, Kristi, lives in a big'ol 13 County farm house
  #fireplaceinthekitchen
#backporchbiggerthanmostNewYorkCityapartments.

She and her husband are in the process of
remodeling/expanding their porch/laundry room.
Kristi found this mid century dresser on an online garage sale site
and asked if I could make it fit in with a Western motif.
We considered using ASCP Emperor's Silk (red) for the project but in the end
decided Florence was a better choice.

Here's the final product.

What'cha think?

I love the color.
Don't you?

Florence looks fabulous against the red barn wood
but she'll also work well with black, browns, greens, whites, etc.

Turquoise jewelry can brighten up any outfit
and I think Florence will have the same dramatic effect on any space in your home.

My client had a specific design style in mind so
I tried to choose hardware that would promote that Western feel.
We both loved these hammered iron pulls from Menards.

Bob the Bull?
Yeah, he was an unexpected gift from my sister, De.
You can about imagine my surprise when I opened that UPS package!

I don't know that Kristi will hang a bull skull in her laundry room/porch...lol.
I think she may have an iron cross though;)

Either way this turquoise dresser will be the crowning jewel her new space.

As always thanks so much for reading 13CCF. Let me know if I can help you with a project.
